Shelter Adopted:

Gwen and Sidney - Mississippi Siblings

Way back in 2013, we had recently lost our beloved bulldog, Abigail. We were not looking to adopt right away but as a volunteer at NiSHA I was able to see the photos of dogs coming up from Mississippi and the picture of a little terrier pup who had just rolled around in the mud touched a part of my heart as it did my husband and son..... And so, when the pups came up from Little Mountain Rescue in Mississippi and made it to the fenced in yard at the shelter, we found ourselves there to meet her.... We weren’t first in line for adopting and the little terrier we had set our hearts on was getting plenty of looks but finally our turn came and she was still left. She had come up with her mother and two sisters who were all being raised in a rabbit hutch.... We watched her running around the yard, playing with the “big dogs” and we knew she was meant for us. We named her Gwen...short for Guinevere.... And almost 7 years later she is definitely the princess of our home.

Two years later lots of my NiSHA volunteer and staff friends pointed out a picture of another “Mississippi mutt” who was coming to Nantucket..... “Sidney” looked very much like Gwen... He had been rescued from a hoarding situation. I knew immediately that I wanted to adopt him but knew that I would need to convince my husband. I got him to come with me to the “Meet and Greet” just to “look at” this cute little terrier pup.... Personality wise he was the exact opposite of the outgoing Gwen and immediately dug a hole under the bushes in the yard to hide in.....

Amazingly enough, when my husband saw him do that, he decided that we needed to adopt Sidney and bring him home which is exactly what we did! Gwen and Sidney became inseparable siblings almost immediately...so different personality-wise, but just right for each other and for our family!
