Luna’s story

One day in December 2014 I got a call from my sister Susan to see if we would transport a momma dog and her litter of 8 that were coming up from Little Mountain Rescue in Mississippi. Our job would be to pick up the dogs at Great Dogs of New England in Woburn and transport them to Hyannis to catch the ferry to Nantucket.

On Monday of the week we were scheduled to transport the pups our beloved 11 year old Mastiff Leo took very ill and we had to put him down late that evening. We were devastated.

On Thursday we got up VERY early to pick up the pups in Woburn at Great Dogs. It was dark and rainy when we arrived to get Edith and her babies. The transport truck was waiting, and I went up to the bearded man with a cigarette hanging from his mouth and a clipboard in his hand. He wasn’t much of a talker and just started handing me puppies (and Edith). I scrambled to get them into the back of our Ford Flex where my wife Cindy was eagerly waiting.

The pups could not have been sweeter and better behaved. We could tell Edith was a wonderful mother as she attentively watched to make sure each pup got safely into the car. She was concerned but still very friendly and she trusted us with them right from the start.

On the drive to Hyannis one little girl decided we were the people for her and crawled up onto Cindy’s lap where she remained for the entire drive. Two days later we journeyed back to the far away island to pick up Ester who we renamed Luna in memory of our dearly departed Leo.

That turned out to be the first of many rescue transport trips we would take from Great Dogs to Hyannis but none was more memorable than that first “Luna”  trip.
